Review: HOKA Mach X 3 – When training suddenly feels easier
There are shoes you like, and then there are shoes that almost make you look forward to pushing yourself on interval sessions. For me, the new HOKA Mach X 3 falls into the latter category.
I’ve had time to run both easy distance runs and tough intervals in this shoe, and the first thing that strikes me is how much easier it feels to change pace. It’s as if the shoe wants to move forward.
First impressions
The first time I slipped on the Mach X 3, I noticed that the upper had been significantly updated compared with the previous version. The tongue is softer and sits better against the foot, and the heel counter feels much more stable. That’s a big plus, since the heel counter on the Mach X 2 didn’t quite fit everyone’s feet.
The mesh is also more breathable, perfect for those hot days when it can sometimes feel like your feet are boiling 😅
Underfoot feel
The midsole combines PEBA Superfoam and Supercritical EVA. It feels soft and comfortable when I’m running at an easy pace, but as soon as I speed up, it responds with a really nice bounce. It’s that feeling that every step gives something back.
Between the layers of foam sits a wing-shaped PEBAX plate. It makes the shoe stable without feeling stiff, and gives me an extra push with every stride without making it feel “too much like a race shoe”.
On the road
This shoe works on the track, asphalt, and gentler terrain, such as gravel park paths. The outsole has more rubber than many other tempo shoes, making it durable and reliable even when it’s wet outside.
I find that the Mach X 3 is at its best on speed sessions. Intervals and threshold runs become more fun. But I wouldn’t hesitate to bring it out for a longer run either. It’s simply too comfortable to leave on the shoe rack waiting for the “right run”. Plus, it works really well for cruising at a lovely pace on distance runs.
Who is it for?
I’d say the Mach X 3 is right for you if you:
- Want a highly versatile shoe that’s clearly at its best for tempo runs and intervals, but also works perfectly well for distance runs.
- Train to get faster at everything from 5 km to the marathon.
- Prefer plenty of cushioning but still want a high level of responsiveness.
- Like stability but don’t want a stiff carbon plate.
My verdict
The HOKA Mach X 3 is a really great update. Small details that were bothersome before have been fixed, and the ride feels both fast and comfortable. I’d go so far as to say this is a shoe that can make you a little more motivated for those tough training sessions. And that’s about as good a review as you can get.
So, are you looking for a tempo shoe that could also become your best friend on race day? Then the Mach X 3 is well worth trying!
