Hoka Tecton X 4 is built for those who want to run fast on trails. This is HOKA’s race-focused trail shoe, combining low weight and responsiveness with the grip and control you need when the terrain gets more technical.
The midsole features two layers of PEBA foam alongside parallel carbon fiber plates. For the Tecton X 4, the plate construction has been adjusted to provide more efficient forward propulsion, while the speed-focused MetaRocker™ geometry helps guide you through your stride. The result is a trail shoe designed to keep you moving fast even when the terrain isn’t flat.
What’s new with the Tecton X 4?
The biggest change is in how the shoe is built for speed. The carbon fiber plates have been adjusted for more efficient forward propulsion, and the upper has been updated with Matryx® Micro, a lightweight, more breathable material designed to perform well even during hard efforts. HOKA has also added a new lacing option for a more secure fit.
Underfoot, Vibram® Megagrip Litebase with Traction Lug and 4 mm lugs provides grip without making the outsole unnecessarily heavy. The extended knitted collar also works much like a low gaiter, helping keep gravel and other debris out of the shoe.
Who is the Hoka Tecton X 4 for?
The Tecton X 4 is best suited to runners looking for a fast, responsive trail shoe for racing and high-tempo runs. It wouldn’t be my first choice for easy everyday runs on trails – the focus here is clearly more on speed, efficiency, and running fast over technical terrain.
With a 5 mm drop, responsive PEBA cushioning, parallel carbon fiber plates, and Vibram grip, the Tecton X 4 is an interesting option for everything from short, fast trail races to longer events where you want to combine cushioning with plenty of propulsion. HOKA lists trail running and racing as its intended uses.
In short: The Tecton X 4 is for those who like HOKA’s cushioned feel but want a much more race-focused trail shoe with carbon fiber and plenty of grip.
