HOKA Mafate 5: World-class comfort, cushioning and grip
I loved the HOKA Mafate Speed 4, and just when you think they can’t make a shoe any better (in my opinion), along comes the HOKA Mafate 5—and it’s something else entirely, a truly fantastic premium shoe. You can feel it as soon as you put it on: this shoe is built for long distances and tough terrain, without sacrificing a light, responsive feel.

First impressions
The upper is completely new, and you notice it right away. It wraps around the foot softly and comfortably without feeling tight, while the heel counter provides firm support around the ankle. The forefoot is stretchy yet protective, giving you confidence when stepping on rocks and roots. An extra plus is the attachment points for gaiters, perfect for muddy trails and longer adventures in the forest.
Underfoot
The midsole is one of the most exciting things about Mafate 5. It consists of two layers of EVA foam: a supercritical foam close to the foot that’s soft and springy, and a softer foam underneath that provides extra comfort and cushioning. Between them in the forefoot is a Rocker Integrity plate (in Hoka terms), which provides stability on uneven terrain and helps the rocker profile (the rolling motion) last longer. The result? A comfortable ride that lets you maintain your pace for longer without tiring yourself out.
The stack height and increased drop (8 mm) also take the strain off your calves and Achilles tendons, which you notice on longer runs. And despite all the cushioning, every step feels responsive and controlled, not mushy or sloppy.
Impressive grip
The Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5 mm lugs is a dream on technical terrain. Whether it’s completely dry, muddy or wet, the grip is incredible. The small “traction lugs” on the lugs provide extra friction, and I feel confident in the grip even when picking up the pace on descents over roots and rocky trails.
Who is Mafate 5 for?
For me, this is a really great trail shoe for anyone who:
- Run long distances, from medium-length runs to ultramarathons.
- Want maximum cushioning and support for your feet, ankles and joints.
- Want to move confidently across technical terrain, through forests and on gravel.
Mafate 5 really is a premium shoe! You put it on, head out on the trails, and everything just works. It’s soft, responsive and stable, with grip that inspires confidence with every step.
Final thoughts
