HOKA Speedgoat 7 – back to its roots

HOKA Speedgoat 7

HOKA Speedgoat is one of the most iconic models in the trail running world. Named after ultrarunning legend Karl “Speedgoat” Meltzer, it was created with a clear purpose: to handle every distance and every type of terrain.

Now Speedgoat 7 is here, earlier than expected, with a new upper, a livelier midsole, and an updated lug pattern. And for many, most importantly, it feels like a real Speedgoat again!

A model that’s found its way home again

Speedgoat has long been one of the most common shoes on the starting line at trail races all over the world. The combination of:

  • Stable, secure fit
  • Protective yet responsive cushioning
  • Vibram Megagrip with serious grip

… have made it an obvious choice for trail running.

But Speedgoat version 6 divided the community. It was perceived as firmer in the midsole, with a looser upper, which some felt made it less secure on highly technical terrain.

Speedgoat 7 is HOKA’s answer!
It goes back to what made versions 2–4 so beloved: the foot sits securely in the shoe, the cushioning is softer and more "lively", and it still offers incredible grip.

Technical specifications

  • Shoe type: Trail
  • Drop: 5 mm
  • Stack height: approx. 37 mm heel / 32 mm forefoot
  • Weight: approx. 257 g (US 9 men's) / approx. 275 g men's / 235 g women's
  • Midsole: Supercritical EVA
  • Outsole: Vibram Megagrip
  • Lugs: 5 mm

Fit: Feels slightly smaller than previous versions. If you’re between sizes, it may be worth trying a half size up.

What’s new in Speedgoat 7

1. Supercritical EVA – more life in every stride

The biggest update is in the midsole.

The supercritical foam delivers:

  • Softer feel than version 6
  • Better energy return
  • Less foot fatigue during long runs
  • More bounce without adding weight

There is no rock plate or carbon fiber plate; instead, the foam absorbs pressure from roots and rocks while also providing a comfortable, lively, responsive feel.

The result?
A max-cushioned trail shoe that still feels fast.

2. Updated upper – better lockdown

The stretchy, sock-like upper is gone. Now we’re back to a more classic trail upper.

Benefits:

  • More secure lockdown over the midfoot (the foot sits more firmly in the shoe)
  • Less movement inside the shoe on technical and sloping terrain
  • Extended tongue that reduces pressure from the laces
  • Durable and robust feel

In addition:

  • Reinforced toe area
  • Reflective details
  • Rear pull loop
  • Gaiter attachment

For those who run on snow, sand or really rough terrain, that’s a big bonus.

3. Vibram Megagrip – same rubber, new pattern

The outsole is still Vibram Megagrip, but with an updated pattern.

  • 5 mm lugs
  • Traction Lug technology (microstructures around the lugs for increased grip surface)
  • Forward-facing lugs for climbing
  • Rear-facing lugs for braking on descents

The grip feels reliable on:

  • Wet rocks
  • Loose gravel
  • Mud
  • Mossy rocks
  • Technical descents

In short: Exactly what you’d expect from a Speedgoat.

How does it feel to run in?

The Speedgoat 7 feels:

  • More lively than version 6
  • Still maximally cushioned but not mushy
  • Stable on technical terrain
  • Light enough to feel quick

It works for:

  • Long trail runs
  • Ultradistances
  • Technical mountain runs
  • Gravel roads
  • Even shorter stretches of asphalt

This is a shoe you can “just put on” for any run.

Who is the HOKA Speedgoat 7 for?

You’ll love this shoe if you:

  • Run trails
  • Want reliable grip on trails
  • Want a shoe that works for both everyday training and racing
  • Missed the feel of older Speedgoat versions

Summary

The HOKA Speedgoat 7 is a clear course correction.
It combines modern supercritical EVA with the classic Speedgoat feel of security and grip.

More lively.
Better lockdown.
Still brutally good grip.

For many trail and ultrarunners, this could be the most exciting Speedgoat version in years!
